Iraqi herbal foundation or back to the hanging gardens of Babylon

Peace. Check out this article detailing how the Iraqi people are taking it back to the herbal foundation in light of the U.S. bombing the kcuf out of Iraq in the name of liberation. In actuality it is a blessing in disguise. Check out the video here

Also sub note. I ain't a Christian so to me Babylon doesn't equal 'evil'. That's one of the foundational places of civilization. Stop letting biblical prejudice white wash your perception of Original People.

We can do it our selves.

Part of my platform is that Original People can solve their own problems if they were just left the hell alone. They don't need 'western tree hugging liberal granola breath hippie rejects' to come and save them and conveniently leave out the elements of racism, colonialism, imperialism, etc.
What is also not acknowledged by the 'green movement media' at large is that alot of Original People have indigenous environmental tactics and programs that are rooted in their own traditions AND they are innovating new ones in the present day.

For instance in Azania (that's modern day South Africa for all of you indigenous illiterate folks)you have Abalimi which is an Urban Action and Environmental Organization doing it's thing. Their work has produced the Women of Fezeka Community Garden. This is an inner city garden run by grandmothers. They are doing their thing! Check them out.

Orange Juice

Peace. Nah. I ain't never drink coffee. No really. I ain't ever touched the stuff. When I was little it was just simple observation. I saw that people had to put a bunch of sugar and milk in it to even drink it. I was like why would I want to drink something that I had to put that much stuff in it in order to make it taste good?

I grew up slightly addicted to orange juice. On the real. We use to drink it with the little juice glasses in the morning yet I got to the point where I wanted like 40oz of OJ. It got so bad that my Old Earth (mother) made me pay an orange juice tax in the house because I drank so much. I am still drinking it hardcore this way. You always going to find me with a glass in the morning. Went from concentrate to squeezing that stuff myself (went through a small childhood phase of drinking Tang cause..ya know...its what the astronauts were drinking).

Now let's get into that health goodness of OJ. One orange will typically produce about 90 grams of juice, and when freshly squeezed, orange juice has a slightly spicy and somewhat acidic taste. Besides water and sugar, it is an excellent source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and potassium. It is also an important natural source of folic acid (Vitamin B9), which is recommended for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.[1] Citrus juices contain flavonoids that are believed to have beneficial health effects.
(i wikied it son)

There are other uses for it also. Certain grains absorb the the flavor of OJ. Thus you can soak them in it and get that OJ flavor. You can do the same with certain green leafy. There is a Desi drink by which you put a little grey salt (there are like a billion different flavor salts) in fresh squeezed OJ and it's bangin. Shoot, OJ along with Mango juice is my nectar of the Gods. In fact..I'm drinking it right now.

Original Men are taking it back

Prince Fielder is on an all-sunflower seed diet

By 'Duk

Well, not quite. But the Brewers' hefty slugger showed up to camp on Wednesday and dropped the mother of bombshells for someone of his considerable size: He is now a vegetarian. After learning the dirty truth about how cows are cut up, he now eats no meat and no fish but he does consume plenty of ketchup-drowned Boca Burgers.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

It wasn't always this way. Fielder used to enjoy a stacked burger or a juicy steak as much as any carnivore, but a few weeks ago he received a book from his wife, Chanel, that changed his outlook on what he puts in his massive frame. The book described how certain animals are treated and slaughtered for food.

...

"After reading that, (meat) just didn't sound good to me anymore," Fielder said. "It grossed me out a little bit. It's not a diet thing or anything like that. I don't miss it at all."

Over here at the BLS, I wish Fielder the best of luck with his new lifestyle, especially once he reports back to the knockwurst-laden burg of Milwaukee.

But I speak from experience when I say it's not going to be easy. While a sophomore at the UW, I once tried to dabble in vegetarianism, but it only lasted all of about five or six hours. I blame Madison's famous Plazaburgers for the death of my idealism.

Because how are you supposed to say no to an all-beef patty topped with a lot of secret sauce and grilled with just the right amount of love? If Prince bucks the odds and continues being all-veggie, all-the-time, I'd like him to tell me.

She put on her smell goods....

...yet does she smell good? In a previous post about inner scent I spoke a little on how live-it (so called diet) influences one's smell. This makes me very picky (hey..you pick fruit don't ya) when it comes to the fair sex, women. I don't kiss women with swine on their lips. That means if you have lipstick on that isn't eco-friendly it ain't happening. If her live-it isn't AT LEAST pork free I ain't kissing at all. If her live-it ain't AT LEAST vegetarian we ain't doing the horizontal mambo.

See, when you get into sex you are exchanging alot of things from fluids to subtle energies. Why would I work so hard to keep my temple clean and then just muck it up because I can't be selective with women and control my gonads? No, despite what you may think this doesn't really limit my choices. The women who I am compatible with are really the only one's I need to be doing the bed boogie with anyway. And no, I ain't really out there like that stalking for sex. It's simply you need to watch what you let into your body totally physically and mentally.

On another note I saw the eclipse last night. Red moon with Saturn to the left. Incredible.

Vegetarian bias worries meat eaters in Mumbai

Vegetarian bias worries meat eaters in Mumbai

BUYERS CHALLENGING REAL ESTATE TREND

By Ramola Talwar Badam
Associated Press

MUMBAI, India - It's not a question of pets, smokers or loud music at 2 a.m. House hunters in Mumbai increasingly are being asked: ``Do you eat meat?''

If yes, the deal is off.

As this city of 16 million becomes the cosmopolitan main nerve of a booming Indian economy, real estate is increasingly intersecting with cuisine. More middle-class Indians are moving in, more of them are vegetarian, and the law is on their side.

``Some people are very strict. They won't sell to a non-vegetarian even if he offers a higher price than a vegetarian,'' said real estate broker Norbert Pinto.

Vegetarianism is a centuries-old custom among Hindus, Jains and others in India. The government reckons India has about 220 million vegetarians, more than anywhere else in the world.

``Veg or non-veg?'' is heard constantly in restaurants, at dinner parties and on airlines. And the question has long been an unwritten part of the interrogation house hunters must submit to.

But it's becoming more open, and the effects more noticeable, all the more so in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, which attracts immigrants from Gujarat and Rajasthan, strongly vegetarian states, as well as followers of the Jain religion.

In constitutionally secular India, there's no bar to forming a housing society and making an apartment block exclusively Catholic or Muslim, Hindu or Zoroastrian.

Vegetarians say they, too, need segregation.

``I live in a cosmopolitan society,'' said Jayantilal Jain, trustee of a charity group. ``But vegetarians should be given the right to admit who they want.''

Rejected home-seekers have mounted a slew of court challenges to the power of housing societies to discriminate, but last year India's highest tribunal ruled the practice legal.

``It's just not fair. It's a monopoly by vegetarians,'' said Kiran Talwar, 49, a prosthetics engineer who has seen vegetarianism take over restaurants and grocery stores all over his childhood neighborhood on posh Nepeansea Road.

``If you step out to eat, there's nothing for miles because everything around is veggie,'' he said.

Suburban supermarkets have been known to dump their non-veg foods overnight because of complaints from shoppers.

``We cleared our shelves of tuna tins and frozen chicken. We don't keep any non-vegetarian items now,'' said Neelam Ahuja, owner of the K-value supermarket. ``Many customers don't like non-veg, so we stopped stocking it.''

While Indians are accustomed to housing societies demarcated by religion, separation by diet has meat-eaters worried. Mumbai likes to think of itself as a city wide open to the world, and some worry the vegetarian tide goes against that trend.

Vikramaditya Ugra, a young Mumbai banker in search of an apartment, said vegetarian colonies were fine in neighboring Gujarat, a state dominated by vegetarians. ``That's in tune with local sensitivity,'' he said.

``But to impose this restriction is not right in a cosmopolitan city like Bombay.''

Dental Health, DIY, pt II

Peace,
Maaaaan funk your couch, I mean, funk your toothpaste. I got several emails regarding tooth decay from not brushing with the 'FDA' approved 'flouride' toothpaste. Despite what they would have you to believe ancient man didn't walk around toothless. What prevents cavities (did I mention that I only have one micro-cavity and I have only recently gone to the dentist. I haven't been in over 18 years)is DENTAL care. And there isn't any better dental care than DIY dental care.

Main thing, get that excess food out of your mouth. After meals brush and floss. Rinse with a nice DIY mouthwash or natural one. The decaying bits of food in your mouth breaks down your teeth.

Two, the MAIN SOURCE of tooth decay is eating all of those sugary, corn syurpy, refined sugar sweets and junk food. Stop it. That's what is making all of those dentists rich. I bet you if you do the above two things you will see an increased change in your dental health.

Finally, do what alot of people in indigenous cultures do. Chew on licorice. Licorice strengthens the immune system, stimulates the adrenal gland, and is diuretic and laxative. The roots contain glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar. You’ve seen the brothers chewing on the ‘sticks’ that have been dipped in various flavors such as peppermint. Also it increases salivia production in the mouth which reduces tooth decay. It has been used world wide in this fashion. It was found even in the tombs of King Tut.

Get with it.

Pepper

Peace,

While growing up I had asthma. Those around me such as my parents and elders didn't let it stop me from achieving certain goals (I was on the track team all through High School and I got some gold and silver medals y'all). Looking back through the lens of environmental racism I can see how my living environment in the 'hood' may have been a root cause in its development.

One of the things though that enabled me to counter it and be on top of it was red pepper. If you take a little dab of pepper when you are having respiratory problems it will help you out. In terms of asthma it enables blood to rush to your wind pipe (which is constricting). Thus it causes it to open up. Whenever I was having problem breathing I would take a pinch and within a few minutes I would be on the road to recovery (funk an inhaler).

Another thing is that it is a topical agent. That is why it is hot in your food. Pepper spray literally has pepper in it. So seeing that it warms things up another good use for it is in the winter time. Sprinkle a little bit in your socks during the cold weather. It'll keep your toes and feet a little warmer.

Wait a minute. Did you say that you are having a problem with ants in your rest? Take some black pepper and sprinkle it where you see the ants at. They'll scatter. Watch WHERE they are scattering to because that is the entrance. Sprinkle some pepper there. You don't need no raid.

In terms of ants did you know that doctors in ancient Indian used army ant heads to suture up wounds instead of thread? They would have several ants bite the wound to close it and then just leave the head until the whole wound sealed up. That's just one to grow on for ya.

Listen

Look at me, see if I am poor, or my people either. The whites may get me at last, as you say, but I will have good times till then. You are fools to make yourselves slaves to a piece of fat bacon, some hard-tack, and a little sugar and coffee.

The Itus

Peace,
Amongst Black folk we call it the 'itus' or 'nigga-itus'. It's when after you eat a huge meal that you want to just lie down and go to sleep. It is the physical manifestation of that sin of sloth and gluttony.

Now the fundamental purpose of food is to provide energy and fuel to the body. Can you imagine filling up the tank of your car and it not starting? That doesn't make any sense. When you eat you are supposed to be energized.

When you are eating the wrong foods your body actually has to use more energy to digest it. Thus the net result is that your body shuts down to digest the food and in the end you don't even get that much energy since most was used for that digestion. When you eat live foods then they are more easily digested by the body and you can get that energy (and funk those energy drinks that are literally liquid crack...get you on a sugar high and then drop you below the level of energy that you started out with).

This is one way to detect if you are eating the right foods (most of the ways that I will drop have to do with simple observation of your body over a period of time..what about that). If you are getting mad tired after you eat a meal...check your live-it (funk die-t).

Edible Flowers

Peace,
A person got at me about the Ginger Brew and why I was adding flowers up in there. Well, what alot of your average folk don't know is that there are alot of edible flowers out there that add some spice and flavor to your dishes. Now I know you may be only use to seeing them as garnishes yet the science is that even garnishes are edible and actually started out that way. Alot of flowers are to be eaten with little else so that you don't loose that delicate flavor.

In fact the flower is just a particular part of a plant, just like a root, leaves or fruit of a plant (thus what you are normally calling 'fruit' isn't a particular type of plant it is a particular part of a plant). In fact when you eat broccoli and cauliflower you are eating the flower of a plant.

So yes, eat your flowers. Check out here to learn more about edible flowers.

Inner Scent

It's bitter yet I drink it as a tea often. Why would I drink Fenugreek? It's used as an ingredient in some curries. So what, so why drink it? Well, let's talk body odor. If you leave meat out and rotting then you know the smell. Well, guess why your body stanks so much. It's because you put stuff in it that stinks when it rots. Meat sticks to those intestines and that odor has to get out some way. Now fruits and veggies pass right on through that system. Plus they don't stink that much when they rot.

Now the reason that i drink Fenugreek tea is because it put a scent of maple or curry like smell in your urine and sweat. That's how I rock my scent.

So lets review

*fast, get the meat gunk out of your body
*switch to a plant centered diet
*drink Fenugreek
*smell good so that the women will say damn

Raw Donut Holes and Ginger Brew

I made the above the other day with some ginger brew/beer. Don't sleep on me when it comes to getting down in the kitchen. Here's a recipe.

*combine about 11/2 cup of grated ginger with 1 cup of date sugar and 4 table spoons of lemon juice and 4 of lime juice with about 1 1/2 quarts of water and bring it to a boil. In another pot mix 1/4 teaspoon of bakers yeast with 3/4 cup of warm water.

*Now ya have to steep it. After steeping the ginger mix for aprox 30 minutes remove it from the heat and add about 3 tablespoons of dried hibiscus flowers and 1 tablespoon of dried rose flower. Stir it up and let sit for 10 minutes. Add 2 12 quarts of cold water and strain into a second pot. Mix in the yeast water.

*Now get 2 clean 2 liter plastic bottles and funnel the liquid into them about an inch below the cap. Add more water if you have to. Seal the bottles and store at room temperature. Let it sit for about 24 hours or until the bottle becoe firm then put into the fridge.

*As they cool down some of the gas will dissolve into the liquid. Open them slow to be safe. They shouldn't explode.

Drink the above with those vegan donut holes and you got a fresh treat.

Dirt Cookies

Peace,
This is why I roll hard with my Green Gangsta. The conditions that are on these indigenous lands are a result of the after effect of Imperialism, Colonialism, Racism, and the post-industrial age. The land has literally been raped of nutrients. It is important that Environmental Racism is examined when we are approaching these subjects. Many times 'green activist' when they come into these situations tend to ignore the CAUSE. And YES there is White Supremacy component.

POOR HAITIANS EAT DIRT!
Poor Haitians resort to eating dirt

By JONATHAN M. KATZ, Associated Press Writer Tue Jan
29, 7:43 PM ET

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - It was lunchtime in one of
Haiti's worst slums, and Charlene Dumas was eating
mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't
afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take
desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16
with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a
traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies
made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central
plateau.

The mud has long been prized by pregnant women and
children here as an antacid and source of calcium. But
in places like Cite Soleil, the oceanside slum where
Charlene shares a two-room house with her baby, five
siblings and two unemployed parents, cookies made of
dirt, salt and vegetable shortening have become a
regular meal.

"When my mother does not cook anything, I have to eat
them three times a day," Charlene said. Her baby,
named Woodson, lay still across her lap, looking even
thinner than the slim 6 pounds 3 ounces he weighed at
birth.

Though she likes their buttery, salty taste, Charlene
said the cookies also give her stomach pains. "When I
nurse, the baby sometimes seems colicky too," she
said.

Food prices around the world have spiked because of
higher oil prices, needed for fertilizer, irrigation
and transportation. Prices for basic ingredients such
as corn and wheat are also up sharply, and the
increasing global demand for biofuels is pressuring
food markets as well.

The problem is particularly dire in the Caribbean,
where island nations depend on imports and food prices
are up 40 percent in places.

The global price hikes, together with floods and crop
damage from the 2007 hurricane season, prompted the
U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency to declare states of
emergency in Haiti and several other Caribbean
countries. Caribbean leaders held an emergency summit
in December to discuss cutting food taxes and creating
large regional farms to reduce dependence on imports.

At the market in the La Saline slum, two cups of rice
now sell for 60 cents, up 10 cents from December and
50 percent from a year ago. Beans, condensed milk and
fruit have gone up at a similar rate, and even the
price of the edible clay has risen over the past year
by almost $1.50. Dirt to make 100 cookies now costs
$5, the cookie makers say.

Still, at about 5 cents apiece, the cookies are a
bargain compared to food staples. About 80 percent of
people in Haiti live on less than $2 a day and a tiny
elite controls the economy.

Merchants truck the dirt from the central town of
Hinche to the La Saline market, a maze of tables of
vegetables and meat swarming with flies. Women buy the
dirt, then process it into mud cookies in places such
as Fort Dimanche, a nearby shanty town.

Carrying buckets of dirt and water up ladders to the
roof of the former prison for which the slum is named,
they strain out rocks and clumps on a sheet, and stir
in shortening and salt. Then they pat the mixture into
mud cookies and leave them to dry under the scorching
sun.

The finished cookies are carried in buckets to markets
or sold on the streets.

A reporter sampling a cookie found that it had a
smooth consistency and sucked all the moisture out of
the mouth as soon as it touched the tongue. For hours,
an unpleasant taste of dirt lingered.

Assessments of the health effects are mixed. Dirt can
contain deadly parasites or toxins, but can also
strengthen the immunity of fetuses in the womb to
certain diseases, said Gerald N. Callahan, an
immunology professor at Colorado State University who
has studied geophagy, the scientific name for
dirt-eating.

Haitian doctors say depending on the cookies for
sustenance risks malnutrition.

"Trust me, if I see someone eating those cookies, I
will discourage it," said Dr. Gabriel Thimothee,
executive director of Haiti's health ministry.

Marie Noel, 40, sells the cookies in a market to
provide for her seven children. Her family also eats
them.

"I'm hoping one day I'll have enough food to eat, so I
can stop eating these," she said. "I know it's not
good for me."

DIY inner planet garden

Peace,
For the urban vegan on the go you have to keep your rest stocked with the right stuff. One plant (in addition to the previously mentioned mint) that you should keep in stock is aloe. If you get a burn, or small cut, or just general skin irritation you can snap off a piece of aloe and let that gel do its magic. If you're a cook (and you know you need to be) then keep that plant near you in the kitchen.

Another thing is that they have developed an aloe vera food preservative gel.

Researchers at the University of Miguel Hernández in Alicante, Spain, have developed a gel based on Aloe vera that prolongs the conservation of fresh produce, such as fresh fruit and legumes. This gel is tasteless, colorless and odorless. This natural product is a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic preservatives such as sulfur dioxide. The study showed that grapes at 1°C coated with this gel could be preserved for 35 days against 7 days for untreated grapes. According to the researchers, this gel operates through a combination of mechanics (Serrano et al., 2006), forming a protective layer against the oxygen and moisture of the air and inhibiting, through its various antibiotic and antifungal compounds, the action of micro-organisms that cause foodborne illnesses.

From Aloe Vera and Food preservation at Wikipedia

Now listen to my man Aloe Blacc sing about catching the bus which all of us non rim spining, non-candy paint, non-car brothers who like to match our energy conversation with our swagger take (and if you're nice we'll meet up where transfers coincide and catch the sights on the line).

School House ROCKS

Peace,
Maaan, those who know me KNOW I love me some School House Rock. So when people come through with parody that is in line with my green gangsta...gotta love it
